Bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert says the universe buries strange jewels deep within us. Nothing seems more true when you hear the surprising story of broadcast journalist Sheree Franklin, who became a successful marketing entrepreneur only to trade it all in for a new career as intuitive coach and meditation counselor.
And, then there’s the intriguing nod from the universe when Sheree Franklin is selected from more than 100,000 applicants to join Oprah Winfrey on her Ultimate Australian Adventure in 2010. This Down Under with Oprah trip led to her being selected as a person of interest to interview for the two-part show.
What’s clear is that Franklin has lived an incredible life of discovery and leadership with much of it about mining those hidden jewels. She has also been featured on various news programs including NBC’s Channel 5 in Chicago, and other prominent media outlets like WBEZ radio. Franklin been a featured columnist in Ebony Magazine and Black Enterprise. But her most recent and compelling work as an intuitive coach suggests she’s just getting started.
For Franklin, the process of living well and harnessing your dreams begins with the tools she offers in her book, Intuition: The Hidden Asset Everyone Should Learn to Use. While most people think of intuition as that little voice telling us what to do when a decision arises, this definition falls short for Franklin. She believes each one of us has it and that “intuition is the God-given gift to sense and feel what is going in and around us at all given times.”
Reflecting on Franklin’s roots and career trajectory, it seems this invisible consciousness has protected, supported and guided her prosperity and happiness. Having grown up in Chicago, Franklin modeled herself after her two hardworking parents who owned and operated a family business. They instilled a deep sense of love and appreciation for the entrepreneurial spirit and the importance of community.
Franklin, a self-admitted “book junkie,” went on to graduate from Northern Illinois University with a degree in Journalism. In her senior year, she was hired as the first Black female morning anchor and reporter for a station in Rockford, Illinois. She credits this position for giving her the confidence and communication skills manifest in her work today.
A year later, when Franklin returned to Chicago, she was unable to find work in broadcasting. So she accepted a position as a commercial insurance underwriter. Marriage soon followed as did a beautiful daughter, Brittany. Taking time out to be at home with her baby changed Franklin, who explored her spiritual side and her own consciousness. Without a formal business plan and little to no savings, Franklin forged her vision of success with courage and hard work.
“Books helped me to explore intuition, mediation and metaphysics… I started to actively believe in my vision – that I could create a business that would provide support for my family, while allowing me to have the freedom to attend my daughter’s assemblies and field trips.”
In 1989, Franklin’s opened Specialties Plus, a successful marketing business built on superior client service. Franklin used her intuitive powers to guide her decision-making, including which clients to take-on and figuring out how to best to serve them. Her company grew into a thriving small business that lasted for close to 20 years.
With falling profit margins caused by a flood of internet competitors, Franklin knew it was time to once again listen to her inner voice and wisdom. Sensing it was pulling her in a new direction in 2006, Franklin sold her business. A happenchance meeting, if you believe in those, with a businesswoman and a dream trip with Oprah confirmed what Franklin knew – she was a teacher who could help others harness their own voices.
Turns out, Franklin had dreamt about Oprah back in 1989, twenty years before their paths actually crossed. She recalled seeing herself standing next to Oprah and holding a few coins. Believing it was a sign to start a new business that would prosper, Franklin had no idea it would foreshadow their meeting years later.
Of course, family, friends and professional associates were puzzled by Franklin’s decision to become an intuitive coach and meditation counselor. But for Franklin, it was simple: “The work I do is not work that you choose, it chooses you. Case in point, when the pandemic started, I asked my intuition how could I serve?” Zoom technology helps Franklin conduct most of her business affairs. She uses this space to teach meditation classes and provide private appointments.
Franklin is truly grateful for her health and peace, and her classes leave you feeling refreshed and more self-reflective. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s become an interesting time for many of us forced to slow down and consider our intrinsic values. How are we using our time and what can we do with an increased awareness of self and our place in the world?
Only when we quietly listen and tune out the noise and endless multitasking that clogs our ability to develop our intuition and instincts, do we unlock our hidden gifts. Franklin has seen these gifts in action – helping people better navigate the myriad of decisions we make each day.
“To process our inner wisdom, each of us needs consistent and dedicated times of silence to gain clarity and wisdom. Reducing the constant flow of information, we increase our ability to focus clearly.”
This konmari style method of decluttering the mind resonates more than ever today, as an increasing number of people incorporate meditation into their daily habits. After meeting Franklin and attending a few of her classes, I have felt the physical and mental effects of this exercise, especially one known as A Golden Pitcher of Love. It’s a series of inhaling and exhaling exercises, and filling the mind with loving golden energy. When released, the energy flows from the top of the head cascading down the body with a healing sense of peace.
