After the generator stopped working, there was only silence.
No news to watch, no global explosions or politicians crackling at this hour. The electricity had failed across the Northeastern Coast of America, COVID was still here, and somewhere in the distance, protests continued.
As I lay awake thinking about what to dream about in the middle of the night, The Power of Now came to me. This phrase is the book title of a spiritual guide by Eckart Tolle. Of his Oprah-esque teachings, one phrase speaks to Womanscape’s changemaker of the week while directing helping us wade through life’s constant challenges.
“Look for the narrow gate to life – the now,” says Tolle. Stop seeking something bigger at the expense of now. Otherwise, you will be anxious and unsettled, and never realize that you are enough as you are – right here, right now.
Tolle says living only for tomorrow causes extreme stress and unease, both of which are rising in our individual and collective psyche. It’s good to set goals but don’t dream away today. It undermines your ability to cope and causes insecurity, fear, and uncertainty about the future.
WS Changemaker of the Week: Harriet Tubman
This week’s changemaker is Harriet Tubman, the daring abolisonist who ran to freedom in 1849. She saved another 300 slaves over a ten-year period as a conductor of the famed Underground Railroad. Tubman left her discontent and stopped waiting for tomorrow. Deeply aware of being in the now, she had the courage to seize the life she deserved with God’s support.
Rose shares Harriet Tubman’s story by movie director Kasy Lemmons, in contrast to Greta Gerwig’s Little Women. This REEL Talk movie review is one of the featured articles in our latest WS issue of FREEDOM. To purchase, click here.
