Denzel Washington’s Advice

We all have a freedom story. Mine wants to keep moving past doubt to better my struggle for happiness. When I focus on that journey, I am rooted in hope and a renewed faith in freedom.

This week, we dare you to go back to these roots. Accept our imperfect freedom because we are human, but continue to fight for the values that shape our reasons for living. Actor Denzel Washington reminds us to keep setting goals and to work hard so a dream is not just a dream.

WS Changemaker of the Week: Sonia Nazario

This week, Womanscape celebrates changemaker Sonia Nazario, whose work has challenged the very notion of the American Dream. Most of Nazario’s career has been spent writing about social justice issues for the Los Angeles Times. Her six-part series on immigration culminated in a book, Enrique’s Journey, and won a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing.

Nazario shares the challenges of a son separated by his mother, who travels to the U.S. from the Honduras. Her failed hopes to earn a better living and be reunited with him (Enrique) speak to many of us who feel cheated by broken promises. Yet even in these failures – our own, others or institutions – the dream can still exist if we set new goals in the face of failure.
