In Greek mythology, Medusa was a winged human female with monstrous hair formed from living venomous snakes. Anyone who gazed upon her face would turn to stone.

For Beijing-based gemmologist and jewelry designer Paloma Sanchez, Medusa is a magnificent 39.18 carat, black opal crafted with 18 carat gold, green tsavorites, sapphires and diamonds. It represents freedom, inspiration and support for the wives of Ethiopian mine workers.
