To go to Hawaii is to fall in love with the beauty of nature; the sand, the ocean, the infinite colours of the fish and coral reef. To absorb these and the warmth of the sun on shoulders and faces and…
Sunscreen! The first and cardinal rule of self-care at the beach.
But Jenna Davis, Maui resident and ocean lover and diver, was among the first to realize sunscreen was not protecting everyone. The once rainbow-colored coral reef she knew was gradually turning white; bleach, from chemicals found in sunscreen seeping into the water.
Every year, between 4000 and 6000 metric tons of sunscreen washes off blissful swimmers into coral reef environments.
Most sunscreen contains ingredients like oxybenzone, butylparaben, octinoxate, and 4-methylbenzylidene camphor. Chemicals that, aside from their dubious effects on skin itself, cause coral bleaching. Because of them, 10% of the world’s reefs are threatened.
Jenna was torn. Was the cost of self-love then, her love of the ocean? The PADI divemaster and SNUBA instructor would not accept that conclusion.
All of its ingredients are plant-based and organic: cold pressed unrefined coconut oil, non nano zinc oxide, raw shea butter, sesame oil, beeswax, jojoba, vitamin E, carrot seed, essential oils, and, to quote Jenna, most importantly: love. Just Raw Love.
“I have dedicated my life to help make the ocean thrive and feel I now have found my voice by creating a product that helps address a real problem.”
“We need to come together and make a difference simply by being conscious of the products that we choose to use.”
That applies to more than sunscreen. Ethical consumption means being aware of the impact of our lifestyle, not only on our own health and well-being, but on our environment.
To protect it is to protect ourselves and our future. And that, is true self-care.
