This is the rallying cry of Sarah Breedlove, known as Madame C.J. Walker. She is hailed as the first self-made female millionaire in America. Although her estate did not actually reflect this amount when she died (1867-1919), Sarah achieved incredible success as an entrepreneur, philanthropist and social and political activist.
Using the name Madame C.J. Walker, her third husband’s surname and the title Madame to give the product line a French-inspired feel, Sarah developed a line of hair and beauty products that she branded under her name for African American women. Sarah was born into poverty and orphaned at the age of seven but never lost hope. Her success inspired women across America to invest in their own wealth.
