The Birth of Venus

Last spring she walked off the canvas, out of the sea and into the hall of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy to meet me.

Sandro Botticelli’s  The Birth of Venus is one of the most iconic paintings in the world. The goddess Venus arrives on the shore, a voluptuous and fully grown woman.

Nearly 550 years later, our oceans look quite different. Thanks to Sylvia Earle, there is hope for a renewed respect for our waters.
